Snapshot - 20 August 2026

UK and European gas markets slipped at the front on Wednesday while the winter and summer contracts further out held firm or gained. Cooler weather after last week's heat, better LNG sendout into northwest Europe and a healthier UK system balance took some heat out of prompt pricing, with NBP day-ahead and September both easing modestly. The seasons told a different story: Winter 26 was effectively unchanged and the 2027 contracts pushed higher, because the market is far more worried about storage adequacy than about the next few days of weather. European inventories are filling too slowly, with the Netherlands and parts of Germany well behind where they need to be, and that is what is underwriting the back of the curve.

Power followed gas down at the day-ahead, though the more interesting move was in the generation mix. Wind output roughly halved as a share of the stack, solar picked up most of the slack and peaked above 10 GW, and gas-fired plant filled the remainder. That combination pushed the day-ahead peak product below baseload - unusual, and a direct consequence of solar hollowing out the middle of the day while the evening stayed priced off expensive gas. Intraday prices swung widely but never went negative, because at current gas costs there is simply no room beneath the marginal plant. Further out, the winter and Q1 contracts firmed while the nearer months eased.

Elsewhere, crude added to its recent gains as the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz continued with no resolution in sight, and coal firmed at the front of the curve. Carbon eased on both the European and UK schemes, with the UK allowance holding a persistent discount to the EUA. Sterling strengthened against the dollar. This morning the whole complex has reopened firmer on a fresh unplanned outage at a major Norwegian processing plant, which has put supply availability back at the top of the agenda heading into the weekend.
