Snapshot - 06 August 2026
Wholesale gas and power fell sharply on Wednesday as reports of a near-complete agreement between Iran and Oman to reopen a commercial shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz took risk premium out of the market. Front-month gas and the Winter 26 season both dropped by more than six per cent on the day, taking Winter 26 to its lowest close in over three weeks and around 16 per cent below its late-July high. Power followed, with winter and Q4 contracts shedding roughly four to five per cent. Prices have corrected upwards this morning, recovering a meaningful part of the fall as traders question how quickly a diplomatic agreement translates into physical cargo flows.
The physical backdrop is comfortable in the near term but fragile further out. LNG regasification into Europe is running above recent averages, the Northwest European arrival schedule for the coming week is almost entirely US-sourced, and Norwegian flows are steady despite maintenance at Kårstø. Against that, European storage is around 58 per cent full, the weakest level for early August in close to two decades, with Germany and the Netherlands lagging the aggregate badly. On the power side, an exceptionally windy Wednesday saw renewables cover two thirds of British demand and system prices spend several afternoon hours below zero, before day-ahead prices rebounded strongly for today's delivery.
Elsewhere in the complex, crude was essentially flat as easing Hormuz risk was offset by fresh attacks on Saudi tankers in the northern Red Sea. Coal continued to slide, carbon eased modestly in both the EU and UK schemes, and sterling was little changed against the euro and the dollar. The near-term direction now hinges on whether the Hormuz agreement is signed and, more importantly, whether cargo flows actually respond.
